Blossom & Fruit
(To the tune of Frere Jacques)
In the darkness, in the darkness
Here we stand, here we stand
Apple trees a-growing, apple trees a-growing
On this land, on this land
Great apple trees, we wassail thee
May you bear, may you bear
Bramley, Lucy, Conference, Russet, Cockle Pippin
That we share, that we share.
May every bough and every twig
Blossom and fruit, blossom and fruit
Give the gift of cider, give the gift of cider
To their roots, to their roots
Address by Wassail Master
Stand fast root, bear well top
Pray the god send us a howling good crop,
Every twig, apples big, Every bough, apples now.
Hail to thee, old apple tree! From every bough - Give us apples now; Hatsful, capsful, bushel, bushel, sacksful
And our arms full, too.
HUZZAR!!
HUZZAR is repeated by everyone. Please make as much noise as possible with voices and drums, tin trays, rattles etc. This is to frighten off evil spirits.
The Wassail Masters aided by the Wassail Princess make offerings to the King Tree. These are toast, salt and cider. The Wassail Masters then drink a toast to the King Tree shouting “Waes Hael” (Middle English for Good Health) to which everyone replies: “Drink Hael”
Mulled cider, and apple juice are available for all to echo this toast. We are grateful for any donations.
Bonfire's Burning
(To the tune of London's Burning)
To be sung as a round (Wassail Master to direct)
Bonfire's Burning!
Bonfire's Burning!
In the Orchard
In the Orchard
Wassail
Wassail
Drink some cider
Drink some cider
