2026 Tasting Day

Tasting Day

Sunday 27th September 2026
2.30pm - 4.30pm

We're delighted to invite you to our annual Tasting Day. Come and join us to taste this year's crop, see how the trees are doing and join in with the children's treasure hunt.

The trees are looking a little light this year after our bumper year in 2025, so we're inviting people to bring apples from their own trees to share this tasting day. Tasting cards will be available for you to make notes and compare varieties.

Why not visit us via the Orchard Trail, which starts at St Peter's Churchyard? We welcome you to enjoy some time down at the Orchard and look forward to seeing you there.

Spring 2026

Last month, our volunteers were hard ar work pruning all the apple and pear trees at the orchard. The winter pruning helps keep the trees healthy, encourages growth and maintains the tree to a manageable size. A huge thanks to all those involved!

We also hosted our annual wassail in January. Despite the freezing temperatures and wet weather, we had a good turn out from the community. Our wassail masters once again led a fantastic ceremony together with the North Downs Drummers from the Limpsfield British Legion to the Orchard. Local photographer, Bob Matthews, kindly documented the event again this year. Our volunteers were assisted by Titsey Rotary, who also lent us a helping hand to marshal the procession to the Orchard. Our thanks to everyone involved in helping make this event happen. Here's hoping for a good crop ahead!

Save the Date - Wassail Jan 2026

Round up of the tasting day 2025

Despite our tasting day being of the wettest so far, we were thrilled so many people came down to the Orchard to sample many of the varieties available at our tasting day. In stark contrast to last year when we had to call on the community to "bring your own", we had an abundance of apples.

Our King tree laden with apples

There were games for the children, home baked cakes and tasting sheets to help visitors decide on their favourite apple variety. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, made donations and spent the afternoon with us. Here's hoping we have an equally successful year next year (and drier weather!)

If our King Tree is anything to go by, we should have plenty of fruit available for tasting this year.

April 2025

What a difference a few weeks makes. Spring has definitely sprung and the Orchard is looking beautiful in the sun. If you've not visited the Orchard recently, now is a good time to see the early blossom on the trees.

Early blossom

Our volunteers have busy as ever. Here's a summary of what they've been up to (or plan to in the very near future!)

  • planted tiny wild hedge whips and wildflower plugs to help increase our biodiversity and encourage wildlife.
  • Establish mistletoe on a couple of our larger apple trees. Hessian strips used to bind the mistletoe to the bark of the trees and prevent the birds eating them. Clever!

For those interested in the variety of hedge whips, here's a list of what was planted.
  • Cowslip
  • Red Campion
  • Field Scabious
  • Wild Carrot
  • Cuckoo flower
  • Ragged Robin

We would also like to introduce the newest member of the Orchard team....Juicy Wilson! Named after a much beloved teacher of James' children who retired after 30 years at the end of this term. The Wilson Juicy is also a variety of apple, although not currently one that grows in the Orchard. Our beloved Deer-dre Appleton had completed a long shift at the orchard and it was time for her to retire. Our thanks to James Reeve, who took the time to construct Deer-dre's replacement.

This blog post ends with the wonderful news that the Orchard was the scene of a marriage proposal! Congratulations to the newly engaged couple. It's so lovely to hear the ways in which the Orchard is visited and enjoyed by the public and members of our community.

Wassail

It was fantastic to see so many members of our local community gather at the British Legion on 19 January to attend the Limpsfield Community Orchard’s annual Wassail. Wassail masters, James Reeves and Stephen Rapoport, kicked off the event by taking us on a journey through time, exploring the origins and evolution of the word “wassail”. It is believed to have started with the Vikings, the Old Norse “vess heill” meaning “be in good health”. It later evolved to mean the drink itself - a warm, spiced alcoholic drink - used in Twelfth night and Christmas Eve celebrations.

Fast forward to 2025 and we’re gathered in the British Legion, sporting all sorts of bright and colourful torches, and noise makers. The rhythmic beats of the North Downs Drummers led attendees through the woodland to the Orchard, the path itself adorned with multicoloured glow sticks to mark the way. It’s not long before bonfire gets going and the carefully crafted woodpile is emitting the warmth and light. Our wassail masters continue with proceedings and it’s not long before we’re joining in song around the decorated King Tree with our cups of mulled cider and apple juice.

The sounds and sights of the wassail resemble an alarm clock of sorts, as we step into another year, emerging from the depths of winter just a few weeks after the winter solstice.

This event is put on for the community by the community and it’s thanks to many individuals and groups that we’re able to put on this free event. A big thank you goes out to our wonderful volunteers who work all year round to maintain the Orchard, wassail masters James Reeves and Stephen Rapoport, bonfire expert Ian Green, first aider Gary Rapson, photographer Bob Matthews and marshals from Titsey Rotary Club.

Wishing you all a fruitful year!

January 2025

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful festive season and end to 2024. We bring you a long overdue update from the Orchard.

Winter Maintenance

Our volunteers have been hard at work this winter to ensure the Orchard remains a pleasant and safe space for our community and the wildlife to enjoy. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved and join us at our works party.

Top Step, Top Job!
If you arrive at the Orchard via the woods from Grub Street (which forms part of our trail to the Orchard from Limpsfield) you will see the top step leading up to the Orchard has been replaced.

New Owl Box
Our new owl box that we bought from The Woodhouse Centre in Oxted is now up and secured! It's positioned fairly high up on one of the pine trees next to the bug house and a new dead hedge is being created around the tree base.

Tree Maintenance
Tree surgery to cut back our fabulous copper beech as part of general maintenance took place in December. A birch had partially fallen near the compost area. It will be dealt with before the wassail but please avoid this area as a precaution until then.

Planting and general maintenance
New bulbs have been planted and wood chippings have been scattered on the muddy paths to aid movement around the Orchard. Maintenance continues with winter pruning, weeding, compost turning and emptying the bird boxes.

Wassail 2025
Reminder about out upcoming Wassail at the Orchard on Sunday 19 January 2025. Please see our previous post for details. We hope you will be able to join us!

Tasting Day 2024 Round Up

A downpour was forecast for our Annual Tasting Day but after some deliberation, we decided to proceed with the event and hope for the best. Luck favoured the bold as the rain held off until after we'd packed up!

It was so lovely to see so many people from the community come together to enjoy the Orchard space and see the great work our lovely volunteers have done to keep the Orchard looking tip-top. It's been a bit of a sparse year for fruit at the Orchard so we were fortunate that Friends of the Orchard answered our call for apples from the local area to help provide content for tasting. Attendees enjoyed sampling the different apples on offer and comparing the tastes, texture and smells of each variety.

A selection of homemade apple cakes went down a treat, and children took part in the treasure hunt around the Orchard.

Thanks to everyone who attended!

Spring Clean

row of 6 colour blocked flowers with the text Blossom above

Our volunteers have been busy at our working parties keeping the Orchard in good condition and what better way to be rewarded than to see the pear blossom out! There is still a couple of weeks before the apple blossom arrives. We won't be having a special event for blossom viewing this year but would encourage you to take a few visits over the coming weeks to see the Orchard transform into something quite magical.

Bring along your picnic blankets and baskets to our summer picnic on the 23rd June. It'll be a great opportunity to enjoy time in the Orchard with other Orchard Friends and members of the local community. Here's hoping for a dry and sunny day!

Unfortunately one of our bird boxes was vandalised, which will now need to be taken down but we've bought three new bird boxes and an owl box from the good folk at The Woodhouse Centre in Oxted. We're pleased to support such a great enterprise that offers so much to our community and would encourage you to check them out.

New Gate Sign Post
Our lovely new gate (pictured above) situated by Westerham Road has improved accessibility to the Orchard making it easier to use. All that's left is to adorn it with a new gate sign post, which will be coming soon.

Get Involved
As you may know, our Orchard relies on your generous donations, be that time, money or both. We're grateful to each and every one of you that helps make this Orchard exist for the benefit of our community. We're always on the lookout for volunteers and as the weather starts to improve, you might consider volunteering with us at our working parties that are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 9.30am. It's great opportunity to get outdoors, socialise and learn more about the Orchard.

We're also on the lookout for a volunteer(s) to help organise our next Wassail. It's a great event for the Orchard and well attended by the community. If you would like to volunteer in any way, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us via email or our Facebook Page.

Best wishes from the Limpsfield Community Orchard Team

Wassail 2024 Round-Up

We held our annual wassail back in January and it was wonderful to see so many members of our community at the event, including friends of the orchard, some of which volunteered with us on the day - thank you! Those of you local to the Oxted area may have seen the write up in the Oxted Local by our very own Robin.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Carolle who stepped up to organise the event for a second time. Carolle is stepping down from organising our future Wassails so we're on the look out for anyone who might be able to help us organise next year's event. If this sounds like something you'd like to get involved with, please contact us; we'd love to hear from you!

Our very well dressed Wassail Masters, Stephen and James, did a wonderful job of leading the proceedings on the evening together with the North Downs Drummers who led the procession from the British Legion to the Orchard. We would also like to express our thanks to the Titsey Rotary Club, whose members made up half of our volunteer team on the day and helped collect donations on our behalf.

The Rotary have also very kindly donated further funds to cover the cost of our new gate which is being installed very soon.

Our volunteers have also been busy at our work parties keeping the orchard in tip top condition with the winter pruning which requires every branch to be pruned at this time of year to ensure each tree is in the best possible shape to bear plenty of fruits later in the year. It's a lovely time to visit the orchard just as we start to emerge out of winter and into spring; a big contrast to the time of year when our trees are in bloom! If you would like to get involved with our working parties, please email us to let us know. We'd love to hear from you and see you at the orchard!

Here's hoping for a very fruitful year ahead from the Orchard!

We hope you've enjoyed the bonus bank holiday weekend this May and managed to enjoy some sunshine. We've been a little quiet lately but now we're back with a date for your diaries!

Wassail 2023

Before we step too firmly into spring, here's a roundup of the Limpsfield Community Orchard Wassail that took place earlier in the year.

It'll come as no surprise that events like the Wassail take a good deal of time and effort to put together, so we were extremely grateful to Carolle Stent who stepped in to organise this year's Wassail. Thank you Carolle!

This year we also welcomed our new Wassail Masters, Stephen Rapoport and James Reeves, who both did a wonderful job. All that preparation, research, speech writing and outfit making really paid off!

Here are some photographs, courtesy of Bob Matthews, from the evening for you to enjoy and here's hoping for a fruitful year ahead.
